The Life and Career of Martin Desjardins
Born in Breda, Netherlands, Martin Desjardins, also known as Martin van den Bogaert, was a sculptor and stuccoist who spent his mature career in Paris. His early professional output included decorative stucco reliefs for the Hôtel d’Aubert de Fontenay and the Hôtel de Beauvais. In 1661, he was accepted into the Académie de Saint-Luc under the name "Martin Desjardins," a translation of his Dutch name. By 1671, he was received as a member of the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture, following the creation of his marble relief, Hercules Crowned by Glory.
