A Life in Art and Science
Jacques de Tonnancour was a Canadian artist and art educator born in Montreal, Quebec. His artistic journey began at the École des beaux-arts de Montréal in 1937, though he departed after three years. Throughout a long and active career, he moved between representational and abstract approaches, working across various mediums including paintings, sculptures, collages, and photographs. In 1942, he joined the Contemporary Arts Society of Montreal, and in 1948, he helped compose the manifesto used by Alfred Pellan to establish the Prisme d'yeux group. This group sought a painting freed from the contingencies of time, place, and restrictive ideology.
In 1958, his work was selected to represent Canada at the Venice Biennale alongside James Wilson Morrice, Anne Kahane, and Jack Nichols. His contributions to the arts were recognized with several honors, including being made a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 1977 and being named an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1979.
Legacy and Later Years
Beyond his studio practice, de Tonnancour was a dedicated educator who taught at the Université du Québec à Montréal, the University of British Columbia, and Mount Allison University. His students included Claude Tousignant and Graham Coughtry. His works are held in numerous public collections, such as the National Gallery of Canada and the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec.
In 1982, he retired from painting to focus his attention on entomology. This passion culminated in the 2002 publication of Les Insectes. Monstres ou splendeurs cachées, a volume he both wrote and illustrated. This work was awarded the Prix Marcel-Couture in 2002. He passed away in Montreal, Quebec.
