Continuing along the theme of the four seasons found in the four murals produced at the Jeanne-Mance Housing Complex (visible from de Maisonneuve Blvd. East), MU has begun a new series on the theme of the four elements (air, water, earth and fire). This first mural of the series, produced by Phillip Adams, evokes the theme of air by playing with perspectives: the dominating sky causes the building to melt into its environment. The lower part of the work is an historical allusion to the neighbourhood’s architecture prior to the construction of the Jeanne-Mance Housing Complex, in 1958. A partnership with the Centre of Montreal History allowed the artist to use period photographs as inspiration to recreate the urban landscape of the past, in both a fictional and hyper-realistic fashion, allowing him to play with perspectives as well. The presence of the orange cones at the bottom of the mural adds a contemporary touch and contributes to identifying the site and its history at the heart of downtown Montreal.

Phillip Adams: A Life in Art and Ideas

Phillip Andrew Hedley Adams (born 1939) is a multifaceted Australian figure – a humanist, social commentator, former broadcaster, public intellectual, and farmer. While widely recognized for his long-running radio program *Late Night Live* and insightful columns, Adams also possesses a significant body of artistic work exploring themes of time, water, and the human condition.

Early Life and Influences

Born in Maryborough, Victoria, Adams’ early life was marked by instability. His parents separated when he was young, leading to a childhood shaped by economic hardship and personal challenges. This formative period profoundly influenced his worldview and later informed his humanist perspective. He briefly joined the Communist Party of Australia as a teenager before becoming a long-time member of the Australian Labor Party.

Career Beyond Art

  • Adams enjoyed successful careers in advertising and film production, contributing to iconic Australian campaigns like “Life. Be in it.” and “Slip, Slop, Slap”.
  • He played a pivotal role in revitalizing the Australian film industry during the 1970s, advocating for government support and establishing key institutions such as the Australian Film Television and Radio School.
  • From 1991 to 2024, he hosted *Late Night Live* on ABC Radio National, becoming a respected voice in Australian public discourse.
  • He continues to write a weekly column for *The Weekend Australian*, offering his unique perspective on current affairs.

Artistic Development and Style

Adams’ artistic practice is deeply intertwined with his intellectual pursuits. His paintings are characterized by their evocative use of color, texture, and composition to explore complex themes. Water frequently appears as a central motif, symbolizing the passage of time, the fluidity of existence, and the interconnectedness of all things. Time itself is another recurring theme, often represented through layered imagery and symbolic references.

Major Works

  • “Au fil de l’eau”: A work that exemplifies Adams' exploration of water as a metaphor for life's journey.
  • “L’air du temps”: Captures the ephemeral nature of time and its impact on the world around us.

Recognition and Achievements

  • Appointed a Member, Officer, and Companion of the Order of Australia.
  • Recipient of six honorary doctorates from Australian universities.
  • Awarded the Gold Lion at the Cannes Lions Festival.
  • Named one of Australia’s 100 National Living Treasures by the National Trust.
  • A minor planet orbiting the sun has been named after him by the International Astronomical Union.

Historical Significance

Phillip Adams stands as a significant figure in Australian cultural life, bridging the gap between art, intellectualism, and public engagement. His work challenges conventional thinking, encourages critical reflection, and celebrates the power of human connection. He represents a unique voice – one that is both deeply rooted in Australian identity and globally aware.
