David Donaldson: The Painter of Highland Majesty

David Donaldson (1916 – 1996) was a Scottish limner—a painter specializing in decorative murals and portraits—who achieved renown for his meticulous depictions of Highland landscapes and his enduring service as Royal Painter to the Queen. He ascended to Head of Drawing and Painting at Glasgow School of Art in 1967, overseeing the education of generations of aspiring artists and shaping the artistic landscape of Scotland. Donaldson’s contributions were formally acknowledged by honorary degrees from Strathclyde University and Glasgow University, recognizing his lifelong dedication to art and scholarship.
