Born in Kronstadt, his artistic journey began early at the Imperial Academy, where he studied under Ivan Akimov and Grigory Ugryumov. His talent was recognized through early accolades, including a silver medal in his first year and a gold medal the following year, eventually leading to his graduation with a first degree certificate in 1797.
