A Life in Lines and Light
Born in Paris, Jean-François Clermont lived through a period of profound transformation in France. While the early details of his upbringing remain obscured by time, he may have been a descendant of Jean Clermont, a student of Eustache Le Sueur. His path as an artist was not a straight line; he spent several years in England before returning to Paris in 1754. This time spent abroad likely shaped his perspective as a painter, designer, and etcher, giving him a breadth of experience that would later define his professional life in France.
His career was marked by a deep commitment to the instruction of others. In 1760, the Académie de Reims recognized his skill by appointing him as their Professor of Drawing. He began this chapter with eighteen students, including figures such as Nicolas Perseval and Jean-Baptiste Germain. His presence in Reims was a significant part of his life, though his tenure was often complicated by the frictions of academic life and the challenges of managing a classroom.
The Struggles of a Teacher
The life of a provincial professor was rarely easy. Clermont faced various frustrations, from the difficulties of dealing with faculty members to the complexities of managing his pupils. There were moments of tension regarding his output and the sale of his works; for instance, in 1768, a print dealer was found with three boxes of his drawings and prints, which Clermont dismissed as a simple matter of thoughtlessness. Despite these annoyances, his value to the city was clear. When he considered resigning in 1779, the city of Reims offered him a bonus of 200 Livres to stay, a gesture that kept him in his position until the school was eventually abolished during the Revolution.
His professional life was defined by several key roles and transitions:
- Professor of Drawing at the Académie de Reims
- Painter and designer of decorative works
- Etcher and printmaker
- Teacher to a generation of French artists
The Final Years
As the political landscape of France shifted, so did Clermont's fortunes. After the school in Reims was closed, he sought new opportunities, including a position at the École centrale in Châltons in 1795. However, the role did not meet his expectations. The later years of his life were marked by a quiet withdrawal from the professional art world. By 1803, he had sold his remaining paintings and drawings, a practical step as he faced increasing hardship. He died in poverty in Reims, leaving behind a legacy found in the pencil drawings and engravings held in collections like the Carnegie Library of Reims.
