Early Life, Family and Training
Francis Stephen Cary was born in Kingsbury, Warwickshire, on 10 May 1808. He was the younger son of the Rev. Henry Francis Cary, a man whose professional life as the assistant keeper of printed books at the British Museum and his scholarly work as a translator of Dante provided a disciplined, intellectual atmosphere for his upbringing. Much of Cary's early education took place within the home, guided primarily by his father's hand.
His formal movement toward the arts began when he became a pupil of Henry Sass at the art academy in Bloomsbury, London. This period of instruction provided the foundation for his subsequent studies at the Royal Academy. His technical development was further refined during a brief tenure in the studio of Sir Thomas Lawrence, a period that offered him a direct connection to the established traditions of English portraiture and composition.
Travels and Academic Career
Cary’s development as a painter was shaped by extensive movement across the European continent. In 1829, he sought further instruction in Paris, later moving through Italy and the Art School at Munich. These years of study were punctuated by periods of travel alongside his father, including foreign tours in 1833, 1834, and 1836. Such exposure to diverse continental traditions provided a foundation for his later professional standing in London.
His professional life eventually centered on the management of the art academy in Bloomsbury. Having previously studied under Henry Sass, Cary returned to the institution in 1842 to serve as its manager. By that same year, he had taken over the academy entirely, at which point it was renamed Cary's Academy. His leadership of the school marked a significant chapter in his career, as he transitioned from a student of the Bloomsbury model to its primary director.
Throughout his adult life, Cary maintained a consistent presence within the established art circles of England. Between 1837 and 1876, he exhibited 35 paintings at The Royal Academy. His work appeared regularly in these exhibitions, reflecting a career that spanned several decades of the mid-nineteenth century.
Circle, Rivals and Pupils
Cary moved within a social sphere shaped by his father’s professional standing. As the son of the Reverend Henry Francis Cary, a scholar and translator of Dante, he was introduced to the most celebrated literary figures of the day. These connections provided a steady stream of intellectual companionship, allowing him to engage with the prominent thinkers of his era through his family's social ties. While Francis pursued the brush, his brother Henry sought a different kind of influence, eventually serving as a judge in New South Wales.
His influence as an educator proved to be perhaps his most enduring contribution to the art world. After taking over the academy in Bloomsbury, he transformed the institution into Cary's Academy. The halls of his school became a meeting place for emerging talent, attracting students who would go on to define the next generation of British painting. Among those who studied under his guidance were Robert Braithwaite Martineau, John Everett Millais, and Dante Gabriel Rossetti.
Key Works and Later Years
Cary’s output spanned a variety of genres, ranging from religious and historical subjects to genre scenes. Among his most noted contributions to portraiture was a 1834 depiction of Charles and Mary Lamb, a work commissioned by John Mathew Gutch. His later years also saw the production of works such as Early Sorrow in 1854. Beyond his studio practice, he sought public recognition through the Westminster Hall competitions, entering as a candidate for the decoration of the Houses of Parliament in both 1844 and 1847.
The final chapter of his life was marked by a quiet withdrawal from the center of London's art scene. In 1874, he retired to the village of Abinger in Surrey. He remained there until his death on 6 January 1880. He left no family behind at the time of his passing.
