The Life and Career of Dominicus Franciscus du Bois
Dominicus Franciscus du Bois was a Flemish artist and draughtsman. Born in Bruges, he received his initial artistic schooling from Joseph-François Ducq before continuing his training with Mathijs van Brée in Antwerp and completing his education with Baron Gros in Paris.
In 1826, du Bois was appointed as the principal of the 's-Hertogenbosch city academy for drawing and painting. Under his leadership, the institution expanded its curriculum to include subjects such as mathematics, architecture, and chemistry, eventually becoming the Royal School for Applied and Visual arts. He also promoted exhibitions in 's-Hertogenbosch and served on the board of the Provincial Society for Arts and Sciences in North-Brabant.
Notable Works and Artistic Focus
Du Bois is known for works that appealed to nationalist feelings during the Belgian Revolution. His paintings, such as those regarding Jacob Hobein and Jan van Speyk, held prominent places in the antechamber of Noordeinde Palace. One notable piece was The Sacrifice of Van Speyk (De Zelfopoffering van Van Speyk), which he created after visiting a gunboat at Fort Crèvecoeur; this work was gifted to the king.
His larger-scale works include a painting depicting the board of the school, featuring himself and Pieter Barbiers in the background.
