The Black Sun (Odilon Redon) Et oliemalerie, malet i hånden kun til dig

Identification of The Black Sun

The Black Sun is a post-impressionist work by Odilon Redon. The artist, born in 1840, moved through the shadows of his early years to find a new language in color. This piece captures a celestial anomaly, a dark sun that hangs heavy in the sky. It is a vision of the unseen, rendered with the sensitivity of a man who spent decades mastering the textures of charcoal and light.

Odilon Redon, who lived until 1916, sought to give form to the intangible. In this painting, the sun does not radiate light but seems to absorb it, acting as a dark, central weight. The composition focuses on the relationship between the celestial body and the figures below. It is a quiet encounter between the human silhouette and the infinite.

Composition and Visual Elements

The composition centers on a celestial anomaly: a large, dark sun that mimics the form of a moon. This heavy, dark orb dominates the sky, casting a shadow of light over the landscape. Two figures stand in the foreground, positioned on opposite sides of the frame. One person occupies the left, while the other remains on the right. They are rendered as silhouettes, their forms stripped of detail to emphasize their posture as they look upward toward the void.

A close-up view focuses the eye on these two figures and the massive celestial body above them. The palette moves through intense shades of red, orange, and yellow, clashing against deep greens. These colors surround the dark center, creating a sharp contrast between the warmth of the light and the coldness of the black sun. The figures remain dark, mere outlines against the shifting hues of the sky.

Light and shadow meet in this narrow space. The silhouettes offer no features, only the suggestion of a gaze directed at the heavens. The colors pulse around the edges of the dark sphere. A quiet stillness holds the scene.
