Narodil se v Leuven, v rámci Habsburské nizozemí, Lucas Van Valckenborch patřil do významné flandrenské umělecké rodiny. V roce 1560 vstoupil do cechu malířů v Mechelenu, kde si osvojil techniku akvarelu. Jeho umělecká dráha byla poznamenána neustálým pohybem a migrací; po ničivém návalu ikonoklasmu v roce 1566 opustil spolu se svým bratrem Martenem Antwerp, aby našli útočiště v Aachenu a v německých zemích. Jeho cestování zahrnovalo i plavbu údolím řeky Meuse, která v roce 1567 zahrnovala pohled na Liège, a čas strávený v Aachenu a Horním Rakousku. Do Antwerpy se vrátil kolem roku 1575, kde nakonec působil jako dvorský malíř arciduka Matyáše. V roce 1593 se připojil ke svému bratrovi ve Frankfurtu nad Márem, kde zůstal až do své smrti.
Van Valckenborch byl především známý svými krajinami, v nichž často využíval ptačí perspektivu. Jeho dílo se pravidelně proplétalo reálnými topografickými detaily s fantastickými prvky, jako byly skalnaté krajiny s železářskými provozovnami nebo náboženské scény.
