De Crayerův raný život byl hluboce zakořeněn v umění. Byl synem Gasparda de Crayera Staršího, uznávaného dekorativního malíře, iluminátora a obchodníka s uměním – toto dědictví v něm vštíplo hlubokou úctu k řemeslné preciznosti a podrobné porozumění uměleckým materiálům. Místo aby zůstal ve svém rodném městě Antverpách, hledal příležitosti v Bruselu, který se pod vládou španělských guvernérů stával rychle rostoucím centrem uměleckého mecenášství. Právě zde, kolem roku 1607, dosáhl statusu mistra v Cechu svatého Lukáše, což byl významný úspěch prokazující jeho technickou zdatnost a oddanost profesi.
Jeho raná kariéra byla poznamenána zakázkami od španělského dvora a místních dignitářů. Rychle se ugruntoval jako portrétista, který zachytil podobu králů, guvernérů i členů bruselské městské rady – díla, která demonstrovala jak jeho schopnost vykreslit realistické rysy, tak rostoucí ovládnutí kompozice.
