Eugène Carrière se narodil 16. ledna 1849 v Gournay-sur-Marne v departementu Seine-Saint-Denis. Jako osmý ze devíti dětí po pojišťovém agentovi prožil své první roky ve Francii, ale jeho cesta k umění začala v anything स्ट्राšburku, kde se kladly základy jeho technických dovedností. Svou první kroky v oblasti výtvarného umění učil na Ecole Municipale de Dessin, kde si prošel náročným praktikantem v oblasti komerční litografie.
Zlomový okamžik nastal v roce 1868. Ačkoliv byl krátce zaměstnán jako litograf, návštěva Paříže změnila vše. Atmosféra velkoměsta a tamní umělecký svět v něm vyvolaly touhu po zcela odlišné životní cestě. Rozhodl se, že se stane skutečným umělcem, což ho vedlo až na slavnou École des Beaux-Arts v Paříži. Právě zde, pod vedením mistra Cabanela, si zušternil svou disciplínu a začal se vzdalovat od komerční přesnosti litografie směrem k hlubokým a komplexním tématům vysokého umění.
Plátno je často ponořeno do husté, mlhavé hnědé atmosféry. Eugène Carrière se vzdal prolétavého světla svých současníků a místo toho zvolil stlumenou paletu, která upřednostňuje psychologickou hloubku před pouhým vizuálním vjemem. Jeho dílo pracuje s monochromatickým efektem clair-obscur, kde kompozici dominují odstíny hnědé a šedé. Tento přístup se snaží zbavit se povrannosti vnějšího světa a sahá k duchovním rezonancím a vnitřním stavům, které se skrývají pod povrchem motivu.
