Lara Ögel: Weaving Narratives of the Everyday

Born in İzmir, Turkey, in 1987, Lara Ögel’s artistic journey is a compelling exploration of the commonplace, imbued with layers of mythology, memory, and personal reflection. Her work transcends simple documentation; instead, she crafts immersive site-specific installations that invite viewers to contemplate the temporal, the vernacular, and the often-overlooked narratives woven into daily life. Ögel’s practice is characterized by a deliberate blending of media – video, collage, pattern, objects, and drawing – creating works that resonate with both immediate sensory experience and profound conceptual depth.

Early influences on Ögel's work are diverse. Her background in Screen Studies from Clark University provided a foundational understanding of visual storytelling and the power of moving images. This academic grounding is complemented by her attendance at the Intensive Summer Foundation at Slade School of Fine Art in London, an experience that honed her observational skills and introduced her to a rich tradition of artistic experimentation. Crucially, her time spent participating in artist residencies – at PRAKSIS in Oslo, Beirut Art Residency, and Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris – fostered a global perspective and exposed her to varied cultural contexts, enriching the thematic scope of her work.

The Language of Installation

At the heart of Ögel’s practice lies a fascination with site-specificity. Rather than creating works destined for a gallery wall, she meticulously designs installations tailored to the unique characteristics of each location. This approach isn't merely about aesthetic adaptation; it’s a deliberate attempt to engage with the history, atmosphere, and social fabric of the space itself. Her installations often incorporate found objects and images, transforming them into potent symbols that evoke forgotten memories or suggest hidden narratives. The use of pattern – frequently intricate and layered – serves as a recurring motif, representing both the order and chaos inherent in human experience.

Ögel’s work frequently draws upon mythological archetypes and dream imagery, creating a sense of disorientation and intrigue. She isn't simply depicting reality; she’s constructing alternate realities—labyrinthine spaces where familiar elements are subtly distorted, prompting viewers to question their perceptions and consider the underlying structures that shape our understanding of the world. The recurring theme of “echo” – as explored in her exhibition at Bilsart – speaks to the reverberations of past events and the ways in which they continue to influence the present.
