Popis sběratelského kousku

Abdoulaye Konaté (b. 1953, Diré, Mali) is an artist who lives and works in Bamako, Mali. He is the recipient of many awards including: Officier de l’Ordre National du Mali (2009); Prix Passeport – Créateurs sans Frontiéres (2008); Chevalier de l’Ordre National du Mali (2002); Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres de la République Française (2002). His work primarily takes the form of textile-based installations that explore socio-political and environmental issues, while also showcasing his aesthetic concerns and formal language. He questions the way in which societies and individuals, both in Mali and beyond, have been affected by factors such as war, the struggle for power, religion, globalization, ecological shifts, and the AIDS epidemic. Konaté draws on the West African tradition of using textiles as a mode of communication and commemoration. Employing material native to Mali – namely, woven and dyed cloths that are sewn together – Konaté creates large-scale abstract and figurative compositions. His referral to a localized cultural technique is then astutely realigned to correspond with a wider geopolitical framework, the material acting as an intercessor between local and global structures. The two compositions presented for EVA International 2016 take the form of one of Konaté’s iconic textile works. These sumptuous pieces from the ‘butterflies series’ are animated by his technical virtuosity and love of colour. The theme of this series recalls the recent anniversaries of the independence of most of the countries on the African continent, and how fragile these states still are post-independence. The image of the butterfly ties in with this fragility. The butterfly also represents the power of transformation and metamorphosis. Its metaphorical value is Konaté’s answer to the curatorial commitment of this biennial edition to explore, face to face, the complexity of the postcolonial condition of Ireland.

Abdoulaye Konaté: A Voice of Texture and Tradition

Abdoulaye Konaté is a Malian artist whose distinctive approach to painting—primarily utilizing textile installations—has cemented his place as one of Africa’s most compelling contemporary voices. Born in Diré, Mali, in 1953, Konaté's artistic journey began with formal training at the Institut National des Arts de Bamako, where he honed his skills and developed a profound understanding of Malian cultural heritage. This formative experience instilled in him a lifelong fascination with weaving traditions and their ability to convey complex narratives—a passion that would become central to his oeuvre.
  • Early Life & Education: Konaté’s upbringing in Diré shaped his worldview, exposing him to the rhythms of rural life and fostering an appreciation for craftsmanship rooted in ancestral practices. He pursued higher education at the Instituto Superior de Arte Havana, Cuba, immersing himself in a vibrant artistic environment that broadened his perspectives and introduced him to diverse artistic methodologies.
  • Technique & Material: Konaté’s signature style revolves around meticulous textile manipulation—a process he describes as “cutting, dyeing, sewing, and assembling fabric.” He meticulously selects fabrics from various sources, often incorporating traditional textiles imbued with symbolic significance. This technique isn't merely aesthetic; it represents a deliberate effort to honor Malian cultural heritage while simultaneously engaging in critical commentary on global issues.

Exploring Cultural Identity Through Textile Installations

Konaté’s artistic vision transcends mere visual representation, delving into profound explorations of identity and history. His installations grapple with themes ranging from political conflicts to religious tensions and environmental concerns—subjects that resonate deeply within the context of Mali's socio-political landscape. He utilizes bold colors and patterns—drawing inspiration from Malian textiles—to communicate these narratives in a visually arresting manner. As Konaté eloquently stated, “I can say that in my art there are two well-defined lines of thought. On the one hand, there is the purely aesthetic side, influenced by the nature and cultural traditions of Mali…”
  • Symbolism & Narrative: The artist’s meticulous attention to detail—particularly the incorporation of symbols derived from Malian cosmology—underscores his commitment to preserving cultural heritage. He seeks to convey complex ideas through visual language, mirroring the communicative power inherent in traditional textiles.
  • Global Concerns & Artistic Expression: Konaté's work confronts pressing global challenges with unwavering conviction. From examining issues like AIDS epidemics and war to addressing debates surrounding globalization and migration, he utilizes his artistic platform to stimulate dialogue and foster understanding.
