Gordon Mckinley Webber was a multimedia pioneer of modernism in Canada, working across various disciplines including painting, photography, design, and architecture. Born in Sault Ste. Marie, Canada, his artistic journey began under the guidance of his mother and continued through his studies at the Ontario College of Art. During his formative years, he was a student of teachers such as Arthur Lismer, J.E.H. MacDonald, and Emanuel Hahn. His early career saw him exhibiting with the Group of Seven and teaching at the Art Gallery of Toronto.
His artistic direction shifted significantly after he enrolled at the New Bauhaus School of Design in Chicago, where he studied with László Moholy-Nagy. This period marked his transition into an abstract painter and an experimentalist interested in art photography, graphics, and stage design. Webber’s influence extended deeply into the Canadian art community through his roles as an educator. He taught at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and served as an assistant professor at McGill University. His pedagogical reach included instructing students such as Guido Molinari and Claude Tousignant. Beyond the classroom, he was involved in the design of costumes and sets for theatrical presentations and contributed to various commissions that integrated art with architecture, such as murals and relief sculptures.
