Keyed bugles were used in bands from the early nineteenth century and enabled bugle players, who were mostly used to signalling, to play melodies. The keys are used to open holes which shorten the length of tube being used and so raise the pitch of the note. Keyed bugles stopped being used when players came to prefer using valves on cornets and trumpets.University of Edinburgh, Musical Instrument Collection: MIMEd 195
