1852 - 1903

A Life Shaped by Loss and Labor

Emanuel Krescenc Liška arrived in Prague as a child of nine, having already lost his father in Milevsko and his mother shortly after. This early solitude left him to find his own way through the city streets. To sustain himself, he worked as an assistant at a local gymnasium and took on tutoring roles. These years of quiet struggle preceded his formal entry into the Prague Academy of Fine Arts at seventeen. By 1873, he had finished his four-year course of study.

His path eventually led him to Munich, where he studied under Otto Seitz at the Academy of Fine Arts. This period brought him into contact with the Munich School, a style defined by its use of naturalism and dramatic lighting. The earnings from specific city commissions later allowed him to spend two years in Italy, an experience that shaped his approach to light and form.

The Weight of Sacred Themes

Much of what he left behind focuses on religious narratives and scenes drawn from poetry. His brush often captured moments of profound isolation or spiritual struggle. In works like Cain, painted in 1885, one can see a heavy, articulated impasto in the foreground and a forebasting sky that mirrors the tension of the subject. He had a way of painting figures with a sense of heroic loneliness.

His interest in biblical stories is evident in his depictions of Hagar and Ishmael. In 1883, he painted Hagar and Ishmael in the Desert, and years later, in 1898, he produced Hagar and Ishmael in the Wilderness. These canvases show a recurring interest in the moment of supplication, where a dry water gourd is cast aside and a child nears death. His oil paintings often utilized luminous tones to pull these heavy themes into the light.

Civic Contributions and Final Years

Beyond his private canvases, Liška contributed to the physical fabric of Prague. He earned second place in a competition for designs for the National Theatre hall and later worked with Jakub Schikaneder to decorate the theatre's Royal Box. Though fire destroyed much of this work in 1881, his presence in the city's artistic life remained. He also held a contract to copy designs onto the calendar dial of the Prague astronomical clock in 1880.

In 1888, he began a period as a professor at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design, a position he held until his death. His life ended suddenly in Prague in 1903 following a stroke. While his oil paintings did not find widespread commercial success during his lifetime, his influence remained within the halls of the academy where he taught.
