Early Life and Military Service Bernhard Heisig entered the world in 1925 in Breslau, Silesia. It was a place of deep roots and complex histories, a setting that would later haunt his brush. Seeking to master the visual language of his era, he began his studies at the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs de Breslau. He was a young man possessed by the promise of craft, yet the winds of history were already shifting, threatening to pull him from t
he quiet sanctuary of the studio. The onset of war brought a sudden and violent interruption to his artistic training. In 1941, the path of the student was abandoned for the path of the soldier as he enlisted in the Wehrmacht. The discipline of the academy was replaced by the harsh realities of military life.
