A Life Formed in Light and Line Born in Fredrikstad in 1851, Benedicte Theodore Scheel moved through the late nineteenth century with a quiet, disciplined focus. The daughter of a military commander, her early years were rooted in the stability of Norwegian life, yet her path led far beyond the borders of her birthplace. She sought out the rigorous training necessary to master the portrait, moving from the studios of Christiania to the
academic centers of Munich and Berlin. These travels provided more than just technical instruction; they offered a window into the shifting currents of European realism. Her education was marked by a steady progression of influence. Under the guidance of Knud Bergsliens malerskole, she learned the foundations of solid portraiture.
