The Quiet Observer of Amsterdam Herman Lugt lived through a period of significant change in the Netherlands, beginning his life in Amsterdam in 1881. His hands were trained for the precision of a painter and the careful lines of a draftsperson. He did not seek to shout through his work, but rather to record the presence of those around him.
