Born in Slateford, Edinburgh, John MacWhirter emerged as a profound voice within the realm of Scottish landscape painting. His early years were marked by a transition from the world of commerce to the pursuit of fine art; following his father's passing, he briefly served an apprenticeship with the booksellers Oliver & Boyd in Edinburgh. However, the call of the canvas proved irresistible. In 1851, he enrolled at the Trustees Academy, where he studied under the guidance of Robert Scott Lauder and John Ballantyne.
