A Vision in Pastel

A blue headpiece rests upon the brow of Joan of Arc. Her gaze meets the viewer from a space where boundaries between figure and background dissolve. Redon used pastel on paper in 1890 to create this soft, luminous effect. The pigment—shades of pink, red, and green—bleeds together into a dreamlike atmosphere. There is no sharp edge here, only the subtle movement of light across her face.
