The Psychical Landscape of Vincent Delorme
Born in 1971, Vincent Delorme has established himself as a formidable force in contemporary digital-image art, crafting a visual language that serves as a profound homage to the Oskar Kokoschka tradition. Working from his studio in Lyon, Delorme does not merely replicate the past; he breathes new life into the raw, visceral energy of Expressionism. His practice is defined by a hauntingly beautiful palette of bruised ochre, dirty pink, and blood red—colors that suggest a state of psychic distress or organic decay. Through his lens, the canvas becomes a site of emotional excavation, where the edges of the subject are perpetually frayed and broken.
The Art of X-Ray Portraiture
Delorme’s signature technique, which he refers to as X-ray portraiture, seeks to pierce the superficiality of the flesh to reveal the underlying soul. His compositions feature subjects pushed aggressively toward the picture plane, with skeletal hands and hollowed eyes emerging from vague, pressing backgrounds. This sense of agitation is achieved through a digital mastery of texture that mimics the physical brutality of scumbled and scraped oil paint. The result is a surface characterized by nervous, scratchy energy, where forms appear to dissolve even as they are being formed, creating a powerful dialogue between presence and disappearance.
