          Early Life and Artistic Training

Born in Seville, Spain, in 1519, Pedro de Villegas Marmolejo grew up in a city that was a central hub for the arts. His early years were shaped by the creative energy of the Renaissance, a period that allowed him to develop his skills as both a painter and a sculptor. He did not simply rely on local traditions; instead, he sought out broader influences, studying the techniques of Roman or Flemish models to refine his hand. This exposure to different European styles helped him build a foundation that was both versatile and technically sound.

His talent was recognized early in his career. By the time he was in his early twenties, he had already achieved the professional status of maestro, a distinction he held before 1540. This early recognition speaks to the discipline he applied to his craft during his formative years in Seville. His life was not solely defined by his studio work, however. In 1542, he married María Salvago, marking a significant personal chapter as he established himself within the social and professional fabric of his home city.

          Artistic Commissions and Works

Much of his life's work was tied to the religious life of Seville. In the Seville Cathedral, he left behind several significant pieces. He painted a Visitation to Elizabeth and several smaller works that decorate the side compartments of an altar. These smaller paintings include San Blas, The Baptism of Christ, St. Sebastian, and St. Roque. Above the arch of the altar, he also placed an Infant Jesus in glory, while nearby, he painted small, lively portraits with a sparkling touch.

His hands were busy with many other local requests. For the church of San Lorenzo, he created an Annunciation and a Virgin and Child. He also painted St. Lazarus for the Hospital of the Lazarines just outside the city. One of his most personal projects was the Sagrada Familia con San Juanito, which he painted on a marble support around 1585–1590. He chose this specific work to be placed over his own future burial site in the church of San Lorenzo, ensuring he would rest directly beneath it.

          Technique and Artistic Style

Pedro de Villegas Marmolejo’s approach to art was shaped by the diverse influences flowing through Seville. His work often reflected the traditions of the masters he studied, such as the Roman or Flemish models. This influence is clearly visible in his Visitation to Elizabeth, which follows the manner of Pedro Campaña. He possessed a delicate touch when working on a smaller scale, particularly in his portraits, where he used a sparkling and animated pencil to bring a sense of life to the faces he rendered.

His technical versatility extended beyond traditional canvas. In his Sagrada Familia con San Juanito, he moved away from standard supports to execute an oil painting directly onto a marble surface. This choice of material required a specific kind of precision. The composition of this work relies on a circular arrangement of figures, a structural choice that guides the eye through the scene. In his depictions of the Madonna, he drew upon the specific type popularized by Raphael, focusing on a sense of grace and movement within the grouping.

          Later Years and Death

In his final years, Pedro de Villegas Marmolejo maintained a deep connection to the intellectual circles of Seville. He shared a close friendship with the polymath Benito Arias Montano, a bond that extended beyond mere social acquaintance. This relationship was so significant that, in his will, the artist chose to leave his personal library and his collection of coins and art to Montano. Such a bequest suggests a man who valued the preservation of knowledge and the continuity of his private interests through a trusted peer.

The artist’s final wishes were tied closely to the sacred spaces where he had spent much of his life working. He had a specific vision for his resting place, requesting to be buried in the church of San Lorenzo. He sought interment directly beneath his own work, the Sagrada Familia con San Juanito, which he had painted on a marble support. This painting was intended to preside over the altar of the Virgen de Belén, the very site he had selected for his eventual burial.

When he died in Seville in 1596, he was laid to rest according to these long-held intentions. His presence remains tied to the church of San Lorenzo, where his physical remains and his painted devotion continue to occupy the same space.

Where to See His Works Today

For those wishing to encounter the physical presence of his creations, much of his legacy remains in the city of Seville, Spain. His hand is still visible within the grand walls of the Seville Cathedral, where the Visitation to Elizabeth resides. This work sits among other religious pieces he contributed to the cathedral's altars, including smaller depictions of San Blas, St. Sebastian, and St. Roque.

A more personal connection to the artist can be found at the Parroquia de San Lorenzo Mártir. It was here that he chose to be laid to rest, and his presence remains tied to this site. The Sagrada Familia con San Juanito, an oil painting executed directly onto a marble support, presides over the Altar de la Virgen de Belén in this church. This specific piece was painted for his own burial site, and he remains interred beneath it. Other works from his hand can also be found within the church of San Lorenzo, marking the spaces he once served.

Beyond these permanent religious settings, his art occasionally moves through the city for public viewing. Some of his paintings have been loaned for temporary exhibitions at the Museo de Bellas Artes de Sevilla. These instances allow his work to be seen outside of its original liturgical context, offering a chance to see his skill in a different light.
