He is the son of a goldsmith named Peter Douwes, but his name carries the legacy of his maternal grandfather, a minister in Kollum. A young man of restless movement, Collenius likely traveled to Italy during his formative years, an experience that would later inform the classical weight of his compositions. By 1669, he appears in Groningen,
