The History and Setting of Pinacoteca Comunale di Cesena

Pinacoteca Comunale di Cesena is housed within the former San Biagio monastery. The building's architecture retains the characteristic features of Benedictine monasticism, including an interior loggia and a cloister. This site serves as a central cultural hub for the city, as the complex also accommodates the Cinema San Biagio, the Fonoteca, and the Istituto Musicale Corelli.

The museum opened to the public in 1984. The collection comprises over three hundred pictorial specimens, spanning from the 15th century to the last century. These works are primarily the output of artists from the Emilia-Romagna region. The exhibition space is organized into two distinct sections: the ancient and the modern-contemporary.

The Diverse Art Collection

The collection spans a broad chronological range, encompassing paintings and sculptures from the late Middle Ages through to the contemporary era. The holdings are largely defined by the artistic output of the Emilia-Romagna region. This regional focus provides a continuous visual history of the territory, moving from early religious works to modern expressions.

The museum's holdings include significant contributions from several notable artists. The selection features works by Bartolomeo Coda, Antonio Aleotti, Renato Guttuso, and Scipione Sacco. These pieces represent different stylistic shifts within the local tradition. The collection also contains works by Baldassarre Carrari, Cignani, Todeschini, Batoni, Piazzetta, Serra, Razzani, and Milani.

The inventory is organized into two distinct sections: the ancient and the modern-contemporary. This division allows for a direct comparison between the historical foundations of the region and more recent developments in Italian art. The physical space, housed within the former San Biagio monastery, maintains the character of its Benedictine origins through its interior loggia and cloister.

Masterpieces of the Museum Collection

The collection features significant works from the sixteenth century, including the 1510 painting Madonna col Bambino e Santi by Antonio Aleotti. Nearby, the 1545 work Cristo di Casa Lancetti by Scipione Sacco represents the mid-century period. The museum also holds the Ritratto di Filasio Roverella, which is attributed to Baldassarre Carrari.

The seventeenth and eighteenth centuries are represented by several Madonnas by Giovan Battista Salvi, known as Sassoferrato. These works contribute to the breadth of the pictorial specimens held within the former San Biagio monastery. The selection of paintings reflects the artistic output of the Emilia-Romagna region across several centuries.
