Psikolojik derinliği olan portreleri ve Alman Dışavurumculuğundaki sonraki gelişmeleri müjdeleyen manzaralarıyla tanınan sanatçının hayatı, skandal yaratan bir aşkın ardından gelen intiharıyla trajik bir şekilde son bulmuş; bu olay çağdaşı Arnold Schoenberg üzerinde de derin izler bırakmıştır.
Refah içinde yaşayan Yahudi bir tüccar ailesinin çocuğu olarak dünyaya gelen Gerstl’in hayatı, sanatçı olma niyetini ilan etmesiyle beklenmedik bir yön kazandı. Bu karar babasının tepkisiyle karşılaşınca aile içinde ciddi gerilimler yaşandı. Geleneksel Viyana Piaristengymnasium okulunda yaşadığı zorluklar ve disiplin sorunları nedeniyle okuldan uzaklaştırılmasının ardından, sanatsızlık tutkusunu sürdürürken özel dersler almaya başladı. 1898 yılında, henüz on beş yaşındayken, talepkar eğitmeni Christian Griepenkerl yönetiminde Viyana Güzel Sanatlar Akademisi'ne girdi. Ancak Gerstl, kısa sürede akademik üsluptan ve Viyana Secession akımının hakim trendlerinden soğudu; hatta bu tavrı nedeniyle Griepenkerl’den sert bir azar işitmesi sanat tarihine geçti.

1907 civarında Gerstl, aynı binada yaşayan besteciler Arnold Schoenberg ve Alexander von Zemlinsky ile yakınlaştı. Gerstl ve Schoenberg arasında derin bir dostluk gelişti; hatta Gerstl'in Schoenberg'e sanat konusunda rehberlik ettiği söylenir. Bu dönemde Gerstl; Schoenberg, ailesi ve dostlarına dair bir dizi portre üretti; bu eserler arasında Schoenberg’in eşi Mathilde’in çarpıcı tasvirleri de yer alıyordu. Ancak Gerstl ile Mathilde arasında başlayan tutkulu aşk, 1908 yazında Mathilde'in Schoenberg'den ayrılmasıyla trajik bir noktaya ulaştı. Gerstl'in mirası, geleneksel estetik kuralların yerine duygusal dışavurumu koyan yeni bir sanatsal dilin inşasındaki öncü ruhunda saklıdır.
