Peter Janssen: sanatçı

Life and Artistic Journey

Peter Janssen was a German painter born in Bonn. He studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy under Heinrich Nauen, Johan Thorn-Prikker, and Carl Ederer, later continuing his studies at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris. His life was marked by significant movement, including stays in Italy, America, and England. During the war years, he was held in a labor camp in Lönnewitz before escaping and returning to Düsseldorf. In 1945, he helped found the Galerie Hella Nebelung. Later in his career, he was appointed to the Hochschule für Bildende Kunst in Berlin, where he remained even after his retirement.

Style and Subject Matter

Janssen's work primarily focused on landscapes, cityscapes, and still lifes, utilizing oil paintings, drawings, and watercolors. His cityscape subjects included views of Bonn, Düsseldorf, Paris, and Barcelona. His artistic style evolved from a late-impressionist and sketchy approach, seen in works like Atelier ohne Maler and Ateliergarten, toward a more expressive and symbolic manner in his later Berlin period, as seen in Fünf Gläser and Roter Hut 3. Fassung. His compositions often featured everyday objects such as hats, glasses, or bottles, characterized by a clear structure and a linear, simplifying representation that stylized motifs toward ornament, rhythm, and symmetry.
