Roll'un kariyerinin seyri, tarihin türbülanslı rüzgarlarıyla geri dönülemez bir şekilde değişti. Milis teğmenliği yaptığı Franco-Prusya Savaşı, bakış açısına insan direnci ve toplumsal çalkantılar üzerine derin bir anlayış kattı. Bu çatışma dönemi, onun bakışını saf romantizmden daha ayakları yere basan, empatik bir realizme doğru rafine eden bir pota görevi gördü. 1875 tarihli başyapıtı The Flood at Toulouse, bu geçişin sarsıcı bir kanıtı olarak durmaktadır; doğal bir afet sırasında yaşanan ani acıları ve hayatın kırılganlığını yakalayarak, salt dekorasyonun ötesine geçmiş ve Fransız halkının kolektif psişik dünyasıyla bağ kurmuştur.
