John Ruskin
1850
26.0 x 21.0 cm
This volume of diary notebook begins in 1846. Primarily an account of his tour abroad, devoted to architecture and detailing his journey with his parents through France and Italy, it also contains extracts from architectural and other works. and contains notes from that year made from what Ruskin cites as ‘Wood’s Travels’ – actually, Letters of an Architect, from France, Italy, and Greece (2 volumes, 1828) by Joseph Woods (1776-1864). The image selected shows the perspective of sail and steam. Ruskin concentrates on the aspect of the view which interests him, the foreground cut off, perhaps by a sea wall, beyond which he records in detail the rigging of sailing ships and the funnels of steamers.
