David Cox, född den 29 april 1783 i det industriella hjärtat av Deritend, Birmingham, växte upp under enkla förhållanden som kom att forma hans konstnärliga vision på djupet. Hans far, en smed, ingöt en arbetsmoral som skulle tjäna honom genom hela livet, även om den unge Davids nätta fysik visade sig vara olämplig för ässjan. Som lärling hos en tillverkare av småsaker – miniatyrporträtt på snusdoser och lackerade spännen – uppvisade han snabbt en fallenhet för måleriet, en talang som vårdats av en mor med ”överlägsen intelligens” och en stilla beslutsamhet. Denna tidiga exponering för finstämd detaljrikedom skulle senare finna sitt uttryck i hans mästerliga akvareller.
Birmingham var vid denna tid en smältdegel av konstnärlig aktivitet, med privata akademier som tjänade de växande industrierna men som också främjade en särpräglad skola inom landskapsmåleri. Cox studerade först hos Joseph Barber och däreligt Albert Fielder, även om hans lärlingsskap fick ett abrupt slut vid Fielders tragiska död. En kort period som scenmålare för William Macreadys teater gav honom värdefull erfarenhet av atmosfäriskt perspektiv och komposition – färdigheter som han senare skulle förfina i sina skildringar av den naturliga världen.
År 1804 gav sig Cox av mot London i jakt på professionella möjligheter. Även om det initiala arbetet vid Philip Astleys amfiteater inte bar frukt, markerade denna period en avgörande vändpunkt. Han ägnade sig åt akvarellmåleri, ställde ut sina verk och etablerade gradvis sitt rykte. Hans giftermål med Mary Ragg 1805 gav hans liv ytterligare stabilitet, och paret slog sig ner i Dulwich. Hans teknik innebar en unik kombination av noggrann planering och spontan utförande, där han ofta arbetade snabbt en plein air för att fånga flyktiga ögonblick av skönhet. Senare i livet vände han sig alltmer mot oljemåleriet och producerade över 300 dukar som idag erkänns som några av hans största prestationer, även om de var mindre uppskattade under hans livstid.
David Cox inflytande på brittisk konst är genomgripande. Han står som en central gestalt inom Birmingham-skolan och överbryggar klyftan mellan topografiskt landskapsmåleri och romantikens mer känslosamma ansats. Hans arbete förebådade impressionismen genom sitt fokus på att fånga flyktiga ögonblick av ljus och atmosfär, trots att han förblev djupt rotad i den engelska akvarelltraditionen.
Trots perioder av ekonomisk nöd och relativ glömska under sin livstid, lever David Coxs arv vidare.
