Early Life and Artistic Training
Born in Mons on 24 October 1699, Giuseppe Grisoni—who would also be known by the names Pierre Joseph Grisoni or Pierre Joseph Grison—entered a world of shifting cultural influences. Though his roots were tied to the Spanish Netherlands, his artistic path would ultimately lead him toward the Mediterranean. His early years were defined by a transition from his Flemish origins toward the structured traditions of Italy.
The formative years of his development took place in Florence. It was there that he studied under the guidance of Tommaso Redi, a mentorship that fundamentally shaped his aesthetic sensibilities. Under Redi’s instruction, Grisoni moved away from his native Flemish influences, instead embracing the formal rigor of the Italian tradition. This period of study provided him with a classicist and academic pictorial approach, grounding his technique in the disciplined methods of the era.
This rigorous training in Florence prepared him for a life of movement and varied professional roles. By mastering the academic standards of the time, he developed the technical foundation necessary to navigate the diverse demands of portraiture and historical subjects that would characterize his later career.
Activity in London and England
The trajectory of Grisoni’s career took a decisive turn toward the British Isles through his association with John Talman. Having met in Rome, Talman encouraged the artist to seek his fortunes in England, a suggestion that led Grisoni to London in 1715. During this period, he sought to establish himself within the competitive sphere of portraiture. While he did not achieve the lasting success required to remain in London permanently, his presence in the English art scene was marked by significant professional engagements.
His technical skill as a draughtsman opened doors to more specialized work. He found employment as an illustrator for the Society of Antiquaries, contributing to the visual documentation of the era. This period of his life was defined by a transition from the academic traditions of his training toward the practical demands of the English market. His time in England was a period of experimentation and adaptation, bridging the gap between his continental education and the specific tastes of his northern patrons.

Notable Works and Artistic Output
Grisoni’s output reflects a versatile hand, moving between the intimate demands of portraiture and the grander scale of religious and mythological subjects. During his time in England, he focused heavily on the social circles of his patrons, producing works such as the Family of William Talman , which is held in the National Portrait Gallery . This period of his life required a certain precision in capturing the likenesses of the era's influential figures, a skill that helped him navigate the cultural landscape of London.
His later focus on the Italian tradition is evident in the works preserved within the Uffizi. Here, his ability to handle complex narratives is seen in the Death of St Romuald and the Rape of Proserpina . These pieces demonstrate a command of historical tableaux, moving away from the strictures of portraiture toward the dramatic requirements of religious and classical themes . Even his own image was subject to his brush; his Self-portrait remains a significant part of the Uffizi collection, offering a glimpse into the man behind the technique.

Later Years and Death
After his time in England, Grisoni returned to Italy in 1728. He transitioned from the life of a traveling artist to that of an educator, taking up a position teaching at the Academy of Fine Arts. This period marked a shift toward a more settled, academic existence within the Italian tradition he had embraced during his youth in Florence.
His movements continued through the mid-century. In 1740, he briefly relocated to Pisa before eventually settling in Rome. It was in this city that he spent his final years, moving away from the transient life of a portraitist and illustrator toward the stability of the Roman art scene. He died in 1769.
