Rihard Gerstl bio je austrijski slikar i crtač čija je kratka, ali intenzivna umetnička karijera postavila njegove temelje na samom čelu ranog ekspresionizma. Iako tokom svog veka nije doživeo priznanje koje je zaslužio, danas se smatra ključnom figurom bečkog modernog umetništva, prepoznatljiv po svojim psihološki prodirućim portretima i pejzažima koji su predvideli kasnije pokrete u nemačkom ekspresionizmu. Njegov život je tragično prekinut samoubistvom nakon skandalozne afere, događaja koji je duboko potresao njegovog savremenika Arnolda Šonberga.
Rođen u imućnoj jevrejskoj trgoviničkoj porodici, Gerstlov rani život dobio je neočekivani preokret kada je javno izneo svoju nameru da postane umetnik. Nakon odlaska sa Akademije, Gerstl je započeo period samostalnog istraživanja. Leta provedena pod mentorstvom Simona Hološija u Nagjbanyi izložila su ga slobodnijim umetničkim pristupima. Međutim, novi sukobi sa autoritetima, uključujući odbijanje učešća u imperialnoj procesiji, doveli su i do njegovog izbacivanja iz Hološijeve škole. Gerstlov stil odlikovan je sirovom intenzivnošću i psihološkom dubinom koja ga je izdvajala od ostalih. On je odbacio dekorativnu estetiku Secesije, birajući umesto toga jarke boje, izobličene forme i ekspresivne poteze četkicom. Danas se pripisuje oko šezdeset šest slika i osam crteža.
