The History of Galerie des Batailles

The Galerie des Batailles occupies the first floor of the Aile du Midi within the Palace of Versailles. Its existence is tied to the vision of Louis-Philippe I, who established the Musée de l'Histoire de France. This gallery was designed in 1833 to serve as a central component of that larger collection. Construction of the space began that same year, marking a significant period of transformation for the palace wings.

The project reached a formal milestone on 10 June 1837, when the gallery was solemnly inaugurated. This opening followed years of development intended to organize the history of France through its military engagements. The space was conceived to house a specific sequence of paintings, spanning from the Battle of Tolbiac in 496 to the Battle of Wagram in 1809. It remains a permanent fixture of the palace, preserving the historical narrative established during the nineteenth century.

Architecture and Decorative Scheme

The space occupies the first floor of the Aile du Midi of the Palace of Versailles, stretching 120 m long and 13 m wide. Designed by architects Pierre-François-Léonard Fontaine and Frédéric Nepveu, the gallery functions as an epigone of the Grande Galerie of the Louvre. The architectural rhythm is defined by a series of Corinthian columns that run along the length of the hall, supporting entablatures. Above these, a wide cornice provides a foundation for a coffered painted ceiling.

The arrangement of the room is intended to create a solemn atmosphere. The walls are punctuated by busts of officers and soldiers, which are placed on supports against the columns and in the spaces between paintings. This placement integrates the sculptural elements directly into the architectural framework of the gallery.

A Pantheon of National Glory

The gallery functions as a solemn space dedicated to the memory of French military history. Along the walls, approximately 30 to 33 paintings depict significant engagements, spanning from the Battle of Tolbiac in 496 to the Battle of Wagram in 1809. These large-scale canvases provide a visual chronology of the nation's martial past, surrounding the viewer within the long, narrow hall.

Interspersed among these works are eighty busts of officers who fell in combat. These sculptures are positioned on supports against the Corinthian columns or placed between the paintings, creating a silent assembly of figures. This presence of the fallen is further reinforced by 13 bronze tablets. These tablets are inscribed with the names of those who were killed or wounded for France, including princes, admirals, constables, marshals, and various warriors.

The arrangement of these elements creates a specific atmosphere of commemoration. The physical presence of the busts and the inscribed bronze provides a tangible connection to the historical events depicted on the walls.

Masterpieces of the Collection

The scale of the works within the gallery demands a certain stillness. One finds Eugène Delacroix’s The Battle of Taillebourg, painted about 1837, occupying a significant presence upon the walls. Nearby, the Battle of Austerlitz by François Gérard remains a central figure, a work originally commissioned by Napoleon. These canvases do not merely occupy space; they command the long corridor through their sheer physical and historical weight.

Among the largest paintings in the collection is the Battle of Bouvines by Horace Vernet, dating to 1827. Its dimensions contribute to the solemnity of the hall. In a similar vein, the Battle of Wagram by Horace Vernet is another significant presence, part of the visual narrative that spans centuries of French military history. These works exist alongside the Entry of Henry IV into Paris by François Gérard, a piece commissioned during the Restoration period.
