zgodnje življenje in začetki kariere
Nikolaš Ševalje, umetnik ruskih koren, je s svojimi deli v Avstraliji in na Novozelandu pustil neizbrisno sled v svetovni umetnosti. Rodil se je 9. maja 1828 v Sankt Peterburgu v Rusiji; bil je sin Louisa Chevaliera, ki je upravljal posesti kneza de Wittgensteina v Rusiji, njegova mati pa je bila Ruska. Leta 1845 je Nikolaš s očetom zapustil Rusijo, nato pa je študiral slikarstvo in arhitekturo v Lausanni na Švici ter v Münchenu.

Ševaljeva umetnična pot ga je leta 1851 vodila v London, kjer je deloval kot ilustrator v litografiji in akvaretu. Med njegove projekte je spadla tudi voda, vzpostavljena na kraljevih posestih v Osborneju, dve njegovi sliki pa so bile leta 1852 predstavljene na Akademiji. Po nadaljnjem študiju v Rimu se je konec leta 1854 preselil v Avstralijo.
