    Umetnik

    Adalbert Erdely

    Rojen v Klimovitsia, Ukraine

The Life and Legacy of Adalbert Erdely

Adalbert Erdely was a Hungarian and Carpatho-Rusyn painter, writer, and art educator who became a central figure in midcentury Transcarpathian art. Born in Klimovitsia, Austria-Hungary, he pursued his formal training at the Budapest Academy of Arts between 1911 and 1915. His academic journey included a scholarship at the Kecskemét Artists' Camp, where he studied under Béla Iványi-Grünwald and Ferenc Olgyay. Following his studies, Erdely served as a drawing teacher in Munkács and Ungvár. His career was marked by significant travel, including a twelve-year tour through Munich, Italy, Poland, and Switzerland, as well as time spent in Paris at the Gargillese art school.

In Transcarpathia, Erdely was a prolific organizer and educator. Alongside József Boksai, he founded an art school in 1927, an institution that eventually evolved into the Transcarpathian Academy of Arts. He also established the Association of Artists of Transcarpathia, serving as its president. His professional life faced significant challenges following World War II; after being accused of "bourgeois aestheticism" and "formalism" by political ideologues in 1949, he was stripped of his official posts and forced into retirement. Despite these hardships, he continued to work through commissions and portraiture until his death in Uzhhorod.

    Artistic Contributions and Style

Erdely was a versatile artist who worked across nearly every genre, leaving behind a body of work that includes:

His paintings are characterized by the use of drama, abstract forms, light reflections, and a palette of bright but harmonious colors. His artistic output was exhibited widely, with solo shows in cities such as Budapest, Munich, Prague, Paris, and Brussels. His works are held in various public collections, including the Museum of Fine Arts of Boksay County in Uzhhorod and the Museum of Fine Arts of the Mukhachevo Basin in Kyiv.

Origins and History of the Gallery

The Central Slovakian Gallery occupies a central position in Banská Bystrica, Slovakia. Its presence in the city dates back to September 1, 1956, when it was established through a separation from the Regional Studies museum. At its inception, the institution functioned as the Regional Gallery. Over the decades, its identity evolved, and it was formerly known as the State Gallery in Banská Bystrica.

As the third oldest regional gallery in Slovakia, the institution has maintained a steady presence within the local landscape. Its foundation was driven by the initiative of artists living and creating within Banská Bystrica. This early communal impulse helped shape the institution's long-term commitment to the region. The gallery has transitioned through various administrative structures, including periods under the management of the city and the regional office, before settling into its current role as a regional gallery focused on modern and contemporary art.

    The Buildings and Architectural Heritage

The presence of the gallery is felt across three separate buildings situated within the center of Banská Bystrica. These structures provide a varied spatial experience for those seeking the works held in the collection. One such location is the Praetorium, a former town hall that was constructed as part of the Banská Bystrica city castle complex after 1500. This building hosts temporary exhibitions, its three-storey exhibition space containing five large halls where contemporary domestic and foreign art is presented.

Another significant site is Bethlen's House, a Renaissance-style building located on Dolná ulica at number 8. This structure is utilized for temporary exhibitions, offering a different architectural atmosphere than the civic halls of the Praetorium. The architecture of the city itself becomes a backdrop for the art, as the gallery's reach extends into the urban fabric of the central district.

The permanent exhibition is housed within the Villa of Dominik Skutecký, which opened to the public in 1994. This building was the original family villa of the artist, providing a direct connection to the domestic spaces where his life was lived. Within these walls, the art is experienced in a setting that remains intimately tied to the history of the region's painters.

    Major Collections and Artistic Focus

The collection is defined by a profound concentration of 20th-century visual arts, encompassing nearly 14,000 art objects. Much of this presence is felt through the works of the second half of the 20th century in Slovakia, which are represented in an almost complete manner. These pieces offer a quiet, substantial record of the era's aesthetic shifts.

A significant portion of the holdings is dedicated to graphic arts. The gallery manages nearly 9,000 graphic works, a focus that has been specialized through research and presentation since the late 1960s. This emphasis ensures that the nuances of printmaking and graphic expression from the latter half of the 20th century are preserved and studied with precision.

Beyond the graphic works, the collection maintains a presence through various other visual arts from the 20th century. These objects are held within the gallery's various spaces, providing a sense of the regional and national artistic development through the decades. Notable examples include:

Liptovská Teplička, about 1960 - Michal Trembáč

Fishing Boats, 1977 - Ernest Zmeták

Blooming Trees, 1935 - Miloš Alexander Bazovský

Madonna and Child, 1936 - Mikuláš Galanda

Portrait of a Man, 1910 - Jaroslav Augusta

    Exhibitions and Research Activities

The institutional program focuses on the presentation, research, and creation of collections of modern and contemporary art. A significant portion of the gallery's scholarly and curatorial attention is dedicated to the specialized research and presentation of graphic arts. This commitment to printmaking has been a defining characteristic of the institution since the late 1960s, resulting in a collection that represents the second half of the 20th century in Slovakia in an almost comprehensive form.

Exhibition spaces within the gallery offer different perspectives on artistic development. The Praetorium building hosts short-term exhibitions that focus on current forms of contemporary domestic and foreign art. This venue has a history of international engagement, having hosted the first international exhibition in the building in 1970. In contrast, the permanent exposition of Dominik Skutecký contains Room 19_21, established in 2008. This specific space is dedicated to temporary exhibitions featuring the work of the youngest generation of artists.

    Visiting: What to See First

Located in the center of Banská Bystrica, Slovakia, the gallery offers a quiet encounter with the legacy of Dominik Skutecký. The permanent exhibition is housed within the Villa of Dominik Skutecký, a space that holds the presence of the artist's evolving vision. The works presented here offer a cross-section of his creative periods, moving from his time in Venice to the peak of his Banská Bystrica period. One finds the artist's development through the specific handling of light and form across these distinct stages of his life.

The villa provides a setting where the paintings exist in a space closely tied to the artist's own history. This connection allows for a focused observation of his technical progression. The exhibition is open to the public, though the gallery remains closed on Monday. For those seeking a specific starting point, the villa remains the primary site for understanding the painter's influence on the region.
