Vilhelm Groth: portrét umelca
A Life Shaped by the Danish Landscape
Georg Vilhelm Arnold Groth lived his life within the borders of Copenhagen. Born to a pharmacist and a mother from a merchant family, his early years were spent in the quiet rhythms of the city. He studied at the drawing school of Frederik Ferdinand Helsted before moving toward more formal training. His time at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts was interrupted by the Second Schleswig War, where he served as a conscript. This period of service paused his academic progress, but he eventually returned to complete his studies, graduating in 1866.
His eyes often turned toward the light found in other places. Between 1872 and 1878, he traveled through Italy and France, spending significant time in Paris. These trips brought back more than just memories; they brought a different way of seeing. While some of his contemporaries looked backward to the ideals of the Golden Age, Groth found himself drawn to the shifting light and the directness of French Realism. He preferred the way an artist could capture the actual state of a landscape as it appeared in a specific moment.
The Brush and the Earth
Groth’s work often focused on the shores of Lillebælt and Hellebæk. He did not seek to idealize these locations but rather to record them. His paintings, often executed in oil on canvas or even on mahogany, show a commitment to the textures of the Danish coast. In works like Hede med en Mose, there is a focus on the dampness of the bog and the heavy atmosphere of the heath. This piece was notable enough to be acquired for the Royal Collection in 1874.
His approach involved a certain level of intellectual engagement with the changing art world. He participated in discussions with radical intellectuals, known as the "Literalists," around 1880. In his writing, such as Dansk Kunst i Forhold til Udlandets, he argued that each era must find its own contemporary influences rather than clinging to the past. This belief is visible in his technique, which moved away from grander, more staged compositions toward a more humble, pared-back observation of nature.
The subjects of his canvases were often found in the quiet corners of the countryside:
- Coastal views near Skagen featuring drawn-up boats.
- Forest scenes near Hellebæk during the month of September.
- Lakesides in Silkeborg under the summer sun.
- The movement of sheep and children playing in the landscape.
By the time he died in Copenhagen in 1899, his work had found a place in permanent collections like the Statens Museum for Kunst and the Ribe Kunstmuseum. He left behind a body of work that reflects a transition from academic tradition to a more grounded, realistic way of documenting the Danish terrain.
