V zlatom veku dánskeho neoklasicismu málo mien vzbudzuje toľko úcty ako Jens Juel. Umelecký základ Juclovho nadania bol položený ďaleko od hal Kodánskej akadémie. Rodičia, ktorí v ňom včas rozpoznali sklon k umeniu, ho poslali do Hamburgu, aby sa učil u maliara Johanna Michaela Gehrmana. Po päť až šesť rokov sa ponorel do technických nárokov remesla a precvičoval si zručnosti, ktoré mu neskôr umožnili ovládnuť krajinárenstvo, žánrové scény a, čo je najznámejšie, portrét. Toto obdobie intenzívneho štúdia mu dodalo všestrannosť, ktorá definovala jeho kariéru a umožnila mu plynule prechádzať od intímnych detailov jednotlivého tváre až po expozitívnu krásu prírodného sveta.
Vo dvadsiatich rokoch sa Juel presťahoval do Kodánskeho, aby študoval na Kráľovskej dánskej akadémii výtvarných umení, kde bolo jeho nadanie rýchlo uznané. Jeho akademické triumfy boli významné; v roku 1767 získal malú zlatú medailu akadémie a v roku 1771 prestížnu veľkú zlatú medailu za diela zorientované na biblické témy.
