Po presťahovaní sa do Paríža vo veku štrnástich rokov sa plne ponoril do prísnej atmosféry École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts. Pod vedením uznávaného Léona Cognieta sa Lefebvre nenaučil len technike; odobral si od neho tradíciiu klasickej vynikavosti, ktorá by definovala celé jeho dielo. Jeho rané triumfy, najmä získanie prestížnej ceny Prix de Rome v roku 1861, signalizovali príchod umelca, ktorý mal osud stať sa základným kameňom akademického hnutia.
