Jacopo Carucci, známy skôr ako Jacopo Pontormo, zostáva postavou hlbokej a často mätúcej fascinácie v dejinách umenia. Narodený v roku 1494 v malom talianskom mestečku Pontorme neďaleko Empoli nemal osud konvenčného umeleckého výchovy. Ako osierotovaný mladý chlapec putoval medzi rôznymi florentinskými ateliérami – najprv u Leonarda da Vinci, potom u Mariotta Albertinellho a Piera di Cosimo, až kým nakoniec nenachvátil domov u Andrea del Sarta. Jeho raná príprava bola poznamenaná prísnou disciplínou vysokej renesancie. Napriek tomu, že od týchto vážených majstrov absorboval princípy perspektívy, anatomie a klasickej kompozície, Pontormo si nakoniec vybudoval úplne vlastnú cestu. Stal sa kľúčovou postavou pre prechod k manierizmu a zásadne ovplyvnil celé generácie nasledujúcich umelcov.
