Eugène Carrière sa narodil 16. januára 1849 v Gournay-sur-Marne v departemente Seine-Saint-Denis. Bol ôsmym z deviatich detí rodiny poistovacieho obchodníka. Prvé roky života strávil v Strasbourgu, kde sa kładli základy jeho technických zručností. Svoje prvé umelecké vzdelanie získal na Ecole Municipale de Dessin, kde prešiel odborným výcvvikom v oblasti komerčnej litografie.
Zlom nastal v roku 1868. Hoci pracoval krátko ako litograf, návšteva Paríža všetko zmenila. Atmosféra mesta a tamojšie umenie mu naručili úplne inú cestu. Rozhodol sa, že sa stane umelcom. Toto rozhodnutie ho priviedlo na École des Beaux-Arts v Paríži. Tam si pod vedením Cabanela precvičil svoju disciplínu a začal sa odkláňať od komerčnej presnosti litografie smerom k hĺbke a komplexnosti vysokého umenia.
Plátno je často ponorené do hustej, zamglenej hnedej atmosféry. Eugène Carrière sa vzdáva prchavého svetla svojich súčasníkov a namiesto toho sa rozhoduje pre tlmenú paletu, ktorá uprednostňuje psychologickú hĺbku pred vizuálnym vnímaním. Jeho tvorba pôsobí prostredníctvom monochromatického chiaroscuro, kde kompozíciu dominujú odtlačkovia hnedých a šedých odtieňov. Tento prístup sa snaží zbaviť sa povrchnosti vonkajšieho sveta a siahnuť po duchovných rezonanciách a vnútorných stavoch, ktoré sú skryté pod povrchom predmetu.

Do roku 1890 jeho fascinácia materskými tématikami dosiahla svoj vrchol s dielom Materstvo, ktoré zachytáva ženu pohladávajúcu svoje dieťa v jemnom, éterickom svetle.
