Early Life, Family and Training

Born in Paris in 1721, Charles Joseph Flipart grew up in a household where the language of lines and ink was part of daily life. He was the son of Jean-Charles Flipart, an engraver, and Maria Boll. His upbringing was deeply rooted in the artistic traditions of his family, as he was baptized in the parish of Saint-Severin. He was not alone in his pursuit of the arts; his brother, Jean-Jacques Flipart, also followed a path in engraving. From his earliest years, Charles Joseph Flipart received his initial training under the steady hand of his father, learning the technical discipline required to master the copperplate.

As he matured, his interests expanded beyond the confines of his father's workshop. Seeking a broader understanding of color and composition, he traveled to Venice. This period of study allowed him to observe the masters of the Venetian style firsthand. While in Venice, he studied painting under Tiepolo and Amigoni, absorbing their approaches to light and form. This exposure to different techniques helped shape his dual identity as both a painter and an engraver, a versatility that would define his professional life.

Key Works and Output

Flipart’s career was defined by a versatility that allowed him to move between the delicate precision of engraving and the broader strokes of painting. His skill as a printmaker was particularly evident in his etchings, such as the work titled Vaga Donzella a cui fra gli agi e l'oro, which he produced about 1748. This piece, an etching with elements of engraving, shows his ability to translate complex scenes into detailed plates. His technical proficiency in this medium helped establish his reputation long before he reached the royal courts of Europe.

His reputation as a court painter and engraver was solidified by his ability to capture the likenesses of those in high positions. His most celebrated plates are the portraits of the King and the Queen of Spain, works that required a high degree of accuracy and a steady hand. These portraits remain central to his legacy, reflecting the prestige he earned after his appointment by King Ferdinand VI. His ability to navigate the demands of the Spanish court demonstrated a professional maturity that complemented his earlier studies in Venice and Rome.

Beyond his formal portraits, Flipart engaged with classical and mythological themes that were popular in his era. He produced works such as Apollo and Clythia, Jupiter and Callisto, and A River and a Fountain Nymph. These subjects allowed him to explore movement and form through both his paintings and his engravings. While much of his work found its way into private collections and religious settings, some of his paintings can still be found in two of the churches in Madrid, where he spent his final years.
