Jules Dupré (1811–1889) se impune ca o figură de temelie în cadrul Școlii Barbizon, un mișcare artistică ce a susținut observația brută și rezonanța emoțională în pictura peisagistică. Traiectoria carierei lui Dupré a fost modelată irevocabil de întâlnirea sa cu pânzele revoluționare ale lui John Constable. Ascensiunea sa în cadrul instituției de artă franceză a fost marcată de etape semnificative, precum acceptarea în Salon și primirea recunoașterii oficiale prin medalii pentru peisajele sale.
