Józef Mehoffer a venit pe lume în Ropczyce, Polonia, în 1869, deși drumul său către easel nu a fost unul imediat. Înainte de a îmbrățișa pensula, a urmat studii juridice, o direcție care s-a schimbat doar după ce un cadou cu vopsele i-a dezvăluit o vocație diferită. Opera sa a devenit o punte între tradițiile academice ale profesorilor săi, precum Jan Matejko, și avangarda emergentă. Se deplasa cu ușurință între pictura pe câmpuz și cerințele monumentale ale artelor decorative. Fie că lucra la portrete, peisaje sau la ilustrații de carte complexe, Józef Mehoffer căuta o fuziune între formă și culoare. Stilul său a început să includă elemente de Post- Impressionism și mișcarea Secesiunii, utilizând adesea palete îndrăznețe și linii fluide care oglindeau spiritul organic al Art Nouveau.
Deși prezența sa se simțea în toată Polonia, Józef Mehoffer a obținut un recunoaștere semnificativă prin munca sa din Elveția. Între 1895 și 1936, a dedicat decenii unui ciclu de treizeci de compoziții de sticlă colorată pentru Catedrala Sfântului Nicolae din Fribourg. Această demers a necesitat o precizie tehnică imensă, deoarece el trata profilul de plumb nu doar ca pe o necesitate structurală, ci ca pe o linie grafică autonomă. A selectat sticlă de diverse grosimi și texturi, folosind tehnica „silver stain” și negru vitreos pentru a manipula modul în care lumina călătorea prin ferestre.
Succesul acestor vitralii i-a adus atenție internațională. La Expoziția Universală de la Paris din 1900, vitralul său intitulat Martirii Martyrs a primit medalia de aur. Această perioadă a vieții sale l-a văzut combinând motivele populare poloneze cu estetica sofisticată a Art Nouveau-ului european. Capacitatea sa de a traduce teme religioase și simbolice complexe în sticlă luminoasă rămâne o parte centrală a identității sale profesionale.
Producția creativă a lui Józef Mehoffer a fost remarcabil de vastă, refuzând să fie limitată la un singur medium. A fost la fel de mare designer de mobilier, textile și afișe, cât a fost pictor de pe câmpuri. Mâna sa poate fi găsită în mozaicurile Catedralei Armene din Lviv și în frescele Catedralei Wawel. În 1897, a ajutat la fondarea societății Sztuka, o organizație care urmărea să afirme independența artei poloneze față de influența puterilor de ocupație.
În ultimii săi ani, Józef Mehoffer și-a stabilit căminul și atelierul pe strada Krupnicza din Cracovia. Această casă, pe care a achiziționat-o în 1932, a devenit un centru pentru adunări muzicale și literare, reflectând rolul său de figură a intelectualismului polonez. A trăit transformările profunde ale începutului de secol XX, continuând să lucreze chiar și în timpul suferințelor celui de-al Doilea Război Mondial. Când a decedat la Wadowice în 1946, a lăsat în urmă o operă care a acoperit tranziția de la tradiția secoul XIX către era decorativă modernă.
