Frederick John Kiesler: un portret al artistului
A Visionary of Space and Form
Frederick John Kiesler was an Austrian-American architect, sculptor, painter, designer, scenographer, author, lithographer, theatre designer, and writer. Born in Chernivtsi, Ukraine, he studied at the Technische Hochschule in Vienna and later attended painting and printmaking classes at the Akademie der bildenden Künste in Vienna. After moving to New York City in 1926, he became a naturalized American citizen. His diverse career spanned various disciplines, from designing multimedia productions for the theater to developing complex architectural concepts.
His architectural and design work included the Film Guild Cinema in New York City and the Shrine of the Book in Jerusalem, which he designed with Armand Phillip Bartos. Kiesler was also known for his "polydimensional" drawings and his theory of "correalism," which explored the relationships between space, people, objects, and concepts. In the 1950s, he created a series of paintings called Galaxies, which were multi-paneled installations that protruded from the wall, combining elements of painting, sculpture, and drawing.
Artistic Contributions and Legacy
Kiesler's sculptural works often reflected his theories of human-design relationships. His installation Us, You, Me featured pieces in bronze, aluminum, wood, granite, and concrete. Another notable work, Bucephalus, was a concrete and mesh sculpture designed to serve as a grotto for meditation. Throughout his career, he explored the dissolution of visual and real environments into free-flowing spaces, a pursuit evident in his "Endless House" project and his biomorphic furniture designs.
His legacy is preserved through the Austrian Frederick Kiesler Private Foundation in Vienna, which researches his estate. The Austrian Frederick Kiesler Prize for Architecture and the Arts is also awarded to recognize extraordinary achievements in architecture and the arts that relate to his experimental and innovative attitudes.
