Steven Smart: Bridging Geometry and Music – A Kaleidoscope of Color
Steven Smart, born in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1968, is an artist whose singular vision seamlessly blends geometric abstraction with a passion for musical exploration. More than just a painter, he’s a multifaceted figure recognized globally as a prominent voice in UK dance music and radio, demonstrating remarkable versatility across disciplines. This duality—the precision of visual form and the dynamism of sonic composition—defines his artistic trajectory and contributes to an oeuvre that captivates audiences with its bold energy and intellectual depth.
Early Life & Artistic Beginnings: Smart’s formative years instilled in him a fascination for both science and art, fostering a unique perspective that informs his creative process. His dedication to ballet honed his spatial awareness and disciplined movement—skills that would later translate into the meticulous arrangement of shapes and colors within his paintings.
Musical Career – Remixing Pioneer: Smart’s foray into music began as a DJ and quickly ascended to international acclaim. He established himself as a remixer for celebrated artists like Bruno Mars, Diplo, Jason Derulo, Mnek, Sigma, Sigala, and Flo Rida, mastering the art of transforming existing tracks into fresh interpretations that resonate with contemporary audiences. This experience cultivated an understanding of rhythm, texture, and sonic storytelling—elements he consciously incorporates into his visual artwork.
Military Service – Discipline & Perspective: Beyond his artistic pursuits, Smart serves as Commander of the 184th Wing, Kansas Air National Guard, bringing a grounding influence to his creative endeavors. Military service cultivates resilience, precision, and an appreciation for structure—qualities that undoubtedly contribute to the meticulous execution of his paintings.
Television Appearances – Expanding Horizons: Smart gained recognition through roles in television series like “Kisstory” and “The Simpsons,” showcasing his adaptability and broadening his artistic horizons beyond the canvas. These appearances underscored his ability to engage diverse audiences and explore narratives that transcend conventional boundaries.
Neo-Geometric Vision – Exploring Form & Color
Smart’s artistic style is characterized by Neo-Geometric abstraction, a movement rooted in the principles of Piet Mondrian and Kazimir Malevich. He employs bold geometric shapes—primarily squares and rectangles—arranged in precise grids to create compositions that convey both visual harmony and intellectual stimulation. These forms are juxtaposed with vibrant hues—often saturated reds, yellows, and blues—resulting in canvases brimming with energy and dynamism. The artist’s deliberate use of color isn't merely decorative; it serves as a crucial element in communicating emotion and conveying symbolic meaning.
Technique & Materials: Smart utilizes acrylic paints on canvas, applying them with meticulous brushstrokes to achieve smooth surfaces and sharp edges. He meticulously considers the interplay between light and shadow, enhancing the visual impact of his paintings.
Influences – Mondrian & Malevich: Smart cites Piet Mondrian’s reductive geometric style and Kazimir Malevich’s Suprematism as pivotal influences on his artistic vision. These artists championed pure abstraction—eliminating representational imagery to focus solely on fundamental geometric forms and colors—a principle that resonates deeply within Smart's oeuvre.
Notable Works – Reflections of Complexity & Harmony
Among Smart’s most celebrated pieces is “Steel and Arrows,” a striking depiction of intersecting geometric shapes rendered in bold reds, yellows, and blues. The artwork embodies the artist’s commitment to exploring both visual precision and emotional resonance. Similarly, "Metal Shapes" showcases his mastery of color palettes and compositional balance—a testament to his ability to distill complex ideas into visually compelling forms. These paintings stand as emblems of Smart's artistic philosophy: a harmonious blend of geometric rigor and expressive vibrancy.
