Frederick Goodall, born September 17, 1822, in London, United Kingdom, was the second son of Edward Goodall, a steel line engraver. He received his education at Wellington Road Academy, which instilled within him a passion for artistic pursuits that would define his entire career. This formative experience nurtured his talent and prepared him for the challenges ahead.
Goodall’s artistic journey commenced with a remarkable commission for Isambard Brunel – six watercolor paintings depicting the Rotherhithe Tunnel, four of which debuted at the Royal Academy when he was merely sixteen. His debut oil painting garnered a Society of Arts silver medal, marking an auspicious beginning to his professional life. Between 1838 and 1859, Goodall’s canvases graced the Royal Academy walls twenty-seven times, cementing his reputation as a prolific and respected artist of his era.
Driven by an unwavering desire for authenticity, Goodall embarked on expeditions to Egypt in 1858 and 1870. He immersed himself in Bedouin culture, meticulously documenting the landscapes and traditions that would fuel his artistic vision. Notably, he brought back sheep and goats from Egypt – a deliberate effort to ensure the accuracy of his paintings and capture the essence of Egyptian life. The Egyptian theme became dominant in Goodall’s oeuvre, resulting in 170 exhibitions at the Royal Academy over four decades.
Frederick married Anne Thomson, daughter of engraver James Thomson, in 1846. Together they raised five children, including artists Frederick Trevelyan and Howard Goodall. Following Anne's passing in 1869, he found solace in companionship with Alice May Tarry, whom he wed in 1872. His artistic legacy extends beyond his own creations; he fostered an environment where creativity flourished within his family.
Some of Goodall’s most celebrated paintings include “The Swing,” “Old Maid,” and “Jessie’s Dream,” which captivated audiences at the Royal Academy and showcased his mastery of genre painting.
