History & Architecture
The site itself has a long and fascinating history, occupying part of the grounds of Bedford Castle. The current building is the result of a £5.8 million redevelopment project completed in 2013, which unified three previous cultural venues: Cecil Higgins Art Gallery, Bedford Museum, and Bedford Gallery.
The re-branding to ‘The Higgins’ acknowledges the site's connection to the Higgins family, who played a prominent role in Bedford’s history. The building seamlessly blends historic features with modern design, creating a welcoming and accessible environment for all visitors.
What Makes It Unique?
- Integrated Collections: The Higgins uniquely combines fine art, decorative arts, and local history under one roof, offering a diverse and enriching experience.
- Dedicated Galleries: The dedicated galleries for William Burges and Edward Bawden provide an in-depth exploration of these important artists’ work.
- Community Focus: The museum actively engages with the local community through a program of temporary exhibitions, events, and family-friendly activities.
