Early Life, Family and Training Reg Butler was born on 28 April 1913 at Bridgefoot House, Buntingford, Hertfordshire. His arrival into the world was marked by a lineage of service and labor; he was the son of Frederick William Butler and Edith. His father had previously served as a police constable and held the position of Master of the Buntingford Union Workhouse. This domestic setting, shaped by the responsibilities of the workhouse,
provided a stark and disciplined backdrop to his formative years. His early inclinations leaned toward the structured precision of design rather than the fluid manipulation of metal. Between 1937 and 1939, he studied at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London. During this period, he also held a position as a lecturer at the same institution.
