Margaret Morris: o artista
A Pioneer of Movement
Margaret Morris was a British dancer, choreographer, teacher, and artist. Born in Kensington, United Kingdom, she spent her early years living in France until the age of five. Her professional journey began in 1894, reciting in French and later English at various social gatherings and court drawing rooms. By 1899, she had her first stage engagement in a pantomime production of Little Red Riding Hood at the Theatre Royal, Plymouth. Her early career included roles in Shakespearian companies and various melodramas, such as The Water Babies at the Garrick Theatre.
Morris was known for reacting against the limitations of Italian classical ballet technique, seeking instead to create more natural exercises. This pursuit led her to develop her own system of movement, which she eventually documented through a method of notation first published in 1928. Her influence extended to the establishment of the Margaret Morris Movement and several ballet companies, including the Celtic Ballet and two Scottish national ballets in Glasgow and Pitlochry.
Artistic and Educational Contributions
Beyond her work in dance, Morris was a painter and designer. She believed in the necessity of relating movement with form and colour, a realization she reached while studying the modern movement in Paris in 1913. This philosophy was integrated into her educational schools, where painting, design, and sculpture were part of the curriculum alongside dance composition and improvisation.
Her work as an educator was characterized by a holistic approach, combining traditional academic subjects with training in acting, music, and movement notation. In addition to her choreography and teaching, she was an accomplished artist who designed costumes and scenery for various theatrical productions. Her legacy is preserved through her writings, including The Notation of Movement, and her various contributions to the development of modern dance and physical culture.
